GLOSSARY

GREENHOUSE GASES

A group of gases like carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), among others, that, as their emissions increase due to human activities, accumulate in the atmosphere, trapping the sun's heat and stopping it from escaping into space.

CARBON

It is a non-metal chemical element, found in the sixth position of the periodic table and symbolized by the letter C.

CARBON

Black sedimentary rock, very rich in carbon and with variable amounts of other elements such as hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen. It burns easily and is one of the most widely used fossil fuels.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

A process aimed at improving the quality of life, health, education and culture for all people.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

A process that makes proper use of current (natural) resources without compromising future generations, by preserving, protecting and conserving both present and future natural resources.

CARBON OFFSETS

Also known as carbon credits, they are tools that finance carbon dioxide capture projects and can be bought by companies or individuals to reduce their carbon footprint.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

An environmental metric that measures the greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions of people, companies, events, industries or activities.

GLOBAL WARMING

The rise in global temperature caused by heat being retained in the atmosphere through the “greenhouse effect”.

CLIMATE CHANGE

The change in temperature and weather patterns caused by the accumulation of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the Earth’s atmosphere.
